India, UK Collaborate on Biotech Crop Research

May 15, 2009

The United Kingdom (UK) gave a US$1.5 M grant to a joint UK-India project to develop biotech pest resistant crops capable of growing in dry climates similar to that in semi-arid peninsular and western India. Research collaborators are the Indian Institute of Science, Leeds University, and the Indian Agriculture Research Institute. The University of Leeds' Intellectual Property Group is expected to explore a commercial spinoff for deployment in India.
