ICRISAT DG Calls for Support to Dryland Farmers

October 31, 2008

It is not just Wall Street that needs bailing out, but also the “side streets”, where poor farmers across the world reside, especially those working the drylands of developing countries, said William Dar, Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Dar calls for international support to help poor farmers in the drylands of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to financial support, Dar noted that there is much need for policies, improved infrastructure, better access to quality seeds and inputs, irrigation,  and more effective institutions.

Dar further commented that cutting-edge agricultural research can achieve substantial improvements in crop yields and farmers’ income. "For every $1 invested in international agricultural research, $ 9 worth of additional food is produced in developing countries where it is needed most,” Dar emphasized.
