International Trade in Crops with New Breeding Technologies: The Australian Perspective

June 9, 2021

ISAAA and partners present the webinar International Trade in Crops with New Breeding Technologies: The Australian Perspective to provide an insight into the future landscape of trade involving gene-edited crops, particularly in relation to countries involved in the international trade of agricultural products. It will be held on June 11, 2021, at 2 PM Manila / 4 PM Sydney via Zoom.

Developments in regulations of gene-edited plants are changing rapidly. Increasingly more countries, including Australia, have implemented deregulation of gene-edited crops. In Australia, this followed a series of reviews by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator. Common approaches are also emerging among many other countries.

During the webinar, experts will discuss the following:

  • building international capacity for gene editing;
  • science diplomacy, policy, and regulatory aspects of crops developed through new breeding technologies (NBTs);
  • the regulatory landscape of gene-edited crops in Australia; and
  • NBT policy approaches and implications for trade in Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia.
The lineup of speakers includes Prof. Michael Jones from Murdoch University; Mr. Muhammad Adeel from WA State Agriculture Biotechnology Center; Ms. Lucy Darragh from CropLife Australia; Prof. Mohd Faiz Foong bin Abdullah from the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee of Malaysia; Dr. Reynante L. Ordonio from the Philippine Rice Research Institute, and Dr. Bambang Prasetya from the Indonesian Biosafety Committee for Genetically Engineered Products. ISAAA Global Coordinator, Dr. Mahaletchumy Arujanan, will moderate the Q&A session.

The webinar is hosted by the ISAAA SEAsiaCenter and co-organized with Murdoch University and the ISAAA Biotechnology Information Centers. Registration to the webinar is free and open to all.
