Stakeholders Contribute to Swaziland's Draft Biosafety Awareness Strategy

Stakeholders in Swaziland held a meeting to provide input into the draft Biosafety Public Awareness Strategy and Actioen Plan last June 19, 2014. The meeting, which was organized by the Swaziland Environment Authority (SEA) aimed to ensure that every Swazi citizen is aware of biosafety issues and has access to information relating to biosafety.

Stakeholders from the Ministry of Agriculture, Swaziland National Curriculum Centre, Swaziland Environment Authority and the media all took part in the one-day workshop.

Swaziland Environment Authority has the mandate to implement the Biosafety Act of 2012 which outlines procedures for handling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and public participation procedure in the management of modern biotechnology practices in the country. The Act is aimed at ensuring an adequate level of protection in the safe transfer, handling and use of GMOs.
