Scientists Sequence Vietnamese Rice Genome

Scientists from the Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC), the John Innes Centre (JIC) in Norwich, United Kingdom, and the Institute of AgriculturalGgenetics (AGI) in Hanoi, Vietnam have fully sequenced the genome of 36 selected Vietnamese rice varieties. These will be used in different genetic and breeding research, including identification of gene functions and the development of molecular markers.
AGI Director Le Huy Ham added that the fully sequenced genome of 36 selected rice varieties from Vietnam will be used by different breeding groups to develop high yielding, high quality crops that are resistant to multiple biotic and abiotic factors. The completion of this collaborative project was marked in a special event hosted by AGI with the presence of authorities from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and representatives from TGAC.
