EU Approves Herculex RW Corn
October 26, 2007 |
The European Commission approved two biotech corn products for food and feed use in the European Union. Corn products containing Herculex® RW Rootworm Protection trait (59122) and the Herculex® I insect protection trait stacked with Roundup Ready® Corn 2 (1507xNK603) are now allowed for import in the EU. The products were jointly developed by DuPont and DowAgrosciences. The approval was made in the effect of a legal default system that kicks in if the Ministers failed to reach a consensus under the EU weighed voting system.
Studies conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), EU’s independent scientific authority, showed that both biotech products are safe for human and animal consumption as well as for the environment. Herculex® RW has previously been approved in countries like the US, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines. The products are allowed for import under EU regulations, including proper labeling and traceability of the products and its derivatives.
