June 15, 2012

The latest edition of the Global Seed Market Report was released by Research and Markets. The report features the current status of the global seed market industry which projected a compound annual growth rate of 1.5% for the period 2012 to 2014.

According to the report, the U.S. is the largest market for seeds followed by China and France, based on value and area of cultivation. Netherlands is the leader in the export and import of vegetable crop seeds, while the U.S. leads the import and export of flower seeds. The global biotech seed market was also reported to be climbing at a fast rate due to the increasing demand for GM seeds.

The report also enumerated the major threats in the global seed market, which include increasing levels of hunger, poverty, population, rising prices of commodities, and exploitation of farmers. Thus, it was recommended that there should be quick adoption of crop technology, wide spread acceptance of the novel traits, and evolution of the international seed trade to ensure global food security over the next years.
