Program on Development of Biotechnology in Russia Through 2020
Russia's "Comprehensive Program for Development of Biotechnology in the Russian Federation through 2020" is recently published by the USDA FAS Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN). The document features various strategies in creating a biotech-oriented economy by 2020 in all areas, and to be at par with developed and developing countries. Currently, Russia is lagging behind in the use of biotechnology including agricultural biotechnology, the document reports.
The program will be implemented in two phases, 2012-2015 and 2016-2020, costing $39 billion with 17 percent ($ 6.7 billion) to be allotted for the development of agricultural biotechnology. The government is thus taking all efforts in the development and use of agricultural biotechnology in Russia and the realization of the potential benefits of the use of this technology for Russian agriculture.
