IPM Tackled In Conference to Address Climate Change

January 28, 2011

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) are effective tools for agricultural development in the light of climate change. This was forwarded by scientists who attended the 4th International Conference on "Development of Integrated Pest Management in Asia and Africa" at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from 20-22 January 2011.

Around 150 scientists, representatives from non-governmental organizations and private entrepreneurs, and extension workers from Japan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea attended. Discussion dealt on the use of Bacillus thuringiensis being the first organically produced environment friendly and safe way to control pests. Majority of modern IPM components are based on modern techniques like biotechnology. Agricultural systems in Asia and Africa should judiciously use pesticides to retain the health of the soil and to minimize environmental and health related hazards.
