October 22, 2010

A Training Workshop on Understanding and Communicating Biotechnology Using Risk Communication was held in Jakarta, Indonesia on 14-15 October 2010. The workshop was jointly organized by Asia BioBusiness Pte. Ltd. and Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development. It aimed to provide a training on risk communication to Indonesian regulators or policy makers in order to address biotechnology issues in the country.

Drs. Andrew Powell and Andy Roberts from Asia BioBusiness served as resource persons and facilitators in the two-day workshop which covered: biotech crops 2010; issues concerning biotechnology in Indonesia; and risk communication principles.

The workshop also focused on the importance of having a regulatory system that could assure the public of the safety of products for commercialization through biosafety reviews and environmental impact assessment that meet the highest scientific standards so that any criticism and opposition can be addressed. Some 34 participants came from government institutions, private sectors, nongovernment organizations and student groups.
