Proceedings on GMOs for African Agriculture
September 16, 2010 |
The Academy of Science of South Africa has published the Workshop Proceedings Report on GMOs for African Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities. Workshop papers include accounts of research being undertaken in Africa on GM technology, and highlights the opportunities created by GM technology and the many challenges faced in applying this technology to African agriculture.
The report noted that the capacity to develop GM technology and to evaluate risks was available. Scientists in African countries were ready to engage in scientific and funding partnerships to develop GM technology. However, it was recognized that there are numerous challenges particularly those relating to the commercialization of GM products and the applications of GM technology in the market place.
