CIMMYT and Indian Gov't to Build Agri Research Center in South Asia

September 9, 2010

Armed with the common goal of ensuring food security, CIMMYT (The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center) and the Government of India agreed to build an agricultural research center for South Asia. A declaration of intent was signed on 7 September 2010 at CIMMYT headquarters during the visit by Sharad Pawar, India's Minister of Agriculture.

"Maize productivity and production in India have shown remarkable progress in recent years," said Mr. Pawar. "However there is still tremendous scope for enhancing the productivity in maize, particularly in Kharif season maize. CIMMYT is an acknowledged leader both in wheat and maize research and can contribute towards productivity enhancement in India as well as other countries of South Asia, in collaboration with members in the region."

The center will be built later this year in India. Its programs will focus on developing maize and wheat crops that are more productive, profitable, sustainable, and flexible, with the help of other agricultural institutions.
