USDA Seeks Public Comments to Prepare EIS on GM Sugar Beets

June 4, 2010

The U. S. Department of Agriculture is seeking public comments regarding the deregulation of genetically-engineered sugar beets, to identify the scope of their study for an environmental impact statement (EIS).

The genetically-engineered sugar beet, commercially labeled as Roundup Ready® (RR) sugar beet, was deregulated on March 5, 2005 after APHIS proved that it did not pose any plant pest risk. However, a lawsuit was filed against the Environmental Assessment (EA) released by APHIS. A U.S. District Court required APHIS to prepare an EIS.

APHIS has reassessed the original petition for deregulation, the EA, the finding of "no significant impact" released in 2005 and the court order to identify possible issues to consider in the EIS. These issues are all stated in the notice for public review and comment released on May 28, 2010. They will accept comments only until June 28, 2010.
