CLI Perspective on Food Security
June 4, 2010 |
The task of feeding the world requires genuine political will and coordinated, targeted policies as well as significantly increased investment. CropLife International makes this assertion in a paper regarding an international perspective on food security.
For investment to make an impact, policies must address six key issues:
- Agricultural productivity must continue to increase in responsible ways.
- Global and local trade must be open, fair, and well-functioning.
- Sustainable resource management should provide farmers with access to knowledge and innovative tools.
- Improved infrastructure must be avilable to raise crop production and quality, reduce post-harvest losses and to secure farmers' access to inputs and markets.
- Rural poverty concerns should be addressed so that livelihoods of the rural poor are protected and enhanced.
- Fostering innovation must be done for new, improved technologies and knowledge.
