US Court Allows Planting and Harvest of GM Sugar Beets

March 26, 2010

Judge Jeffrey White of the federal district court in California has reason to believe that an immediate ban on the commercial planting of GM sugar beets will not be an appropriate measure. An injunction filed by several environmental groups to prohibit commercial planting was denied by Judge White of the US court due to inadequate clarification of cross-pollination risks.

Almost all sugar beets planted in 475,000 hectares in the USA in 2009 is genetically modified and banning GM sugar beet planting will have a detrimental effect on the sugar supply and price, said White on his ruling. Monsanto developed the genetically modified glyphosate resistant sugar beets together with KWS Saat. Cross- pollination should not be an issue in sugar beet cultivation since the plant flowers once every two years and are harvested during the first year.
