SCRI Support for Farmers in Malawi

March 26, 2010

The Scottish Government's International Development fund has provided an award of nearly £400,000 to farmers in Malawi to improve their potato crops and to benefit from the expertise of researchers from the Scottish Crops  Research Institute (SCRI). The Institute in collaboration with the International Potato Center and national potato researchers will work with farmers to combat constraints and improve potato crop yields that would eventually reduce poverty and increase food security in Malawi.

Fiona Hyslop, External Affairs Minister, believes that "Increased yields and sustainable potato production can only happen if we develop effective systems for virus-free seed potato production but once these systems are in place it should make a significant contribution towards improving food security and reducing poverty."
