Syngenta, Evogene Team up to Battle Soybean Worm

July 3, 2009

Syngenta and Israel-based Evogene Ltd announced that they will be working together to identify genes that will provide resistance against the devastating soybean nematode (Heterodera glycines). The soil parasite can cause yield loss of up to 20 percent. In the United States alone, nematode damage to the soybean crop is estimated at $1 billion a year. Under the terms of the agreement, Evogene will hunt for candidate genes using their proprietary gene discovery technology called "Athlete." Syngenta will examine these genes in its R&D facilities and have the right to market any new soybean strains it develops.
