Pakistan Allots Budget for Biotech R & D

The Pakistan government is set to advance biotechnology research and development in the country by upgrading existing scientific facilities and initiating the establishment of two world class institutes of research for wheat and cotton. This was announced by the Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance Shaukat Tarin and the Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar.
In addition, ten model agricultural union councils for each major crop across the country will be set up. These policy measures by the government have led to an estimated transfer of resources of about Rs 294 million into the rural economy. The government has also signed an agreement with Monsanto to formally introduce genetically modified cotton on fast track basis. Farmers will be offered Bt cotton hybrid varieties during Fiscal Year 2009- 10.
