IFAD-Supported Program to Boost Agriculture in Tanzania

March 6, 2009

The United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has granted the Republic of Tanzania a US$56 million loan to support the government's efforts to encourage economic growth and reduce poverty in the country by supporting the development of smallholder agriculture. The agricultural sector in Tanzania comprises mainly smallholder farmers.

IFAD said that the program is expected to help poor rural women and men living on less than US$1 a day boost their agricultural productivity and incomes. The program will also assist people most vulnerable to food insecurity, giving them access to agricultural knowledge, technologies, marketing systems and infrastructure.
