Framework for Global Partnership on Plant Breeding Capacity Building

September 5, 2008

The Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding (GIPB) Capacity Building, a platform facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has released the combined task force reports on the "Formulation of the organizational and implementation framework for the Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding capacity building". There is no better time, says the report, "to enhance access and sustainable use of plant genetic resources to help overcome barriers that limit food security, expecially in developing countries".

The report suggests better use of genetic diversity through breeding and improved production systems to tackle the huge challenge of widening the genetic and adaptability base of cropping systems. However, there is a need for a capacity building initiative that can generate the critical mass of plant breeders and related professionals who can network and enhance sustainability.  GIPB was identified as a key element to mobilize partnerships among institutional service providers and donors.
