Indonesia to Boost Jatropha Productivity though GE

The Department of Agriculture in Indonesia supports the development of the biodiesel industry through the utilization of jatropha (Jatropha curcas) as feedstock. The Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Anton Apriyantono disclosed in his field visit to the Indonesian Species and Industrial Crops Research Institute at Pakuwon, Sukabumi, West Java that besides the support to the development of hybrid jatropha, the department is also looking at the use of genetic engineering to enhance the development of a disease resistant and drought tolerant variety. This is essential, he said, to be able to improve the productivity and profitability of jatropha.
