PhilRice Calls for Reversal of Court Decision on Golden Rice
November 6, 2024 |
The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) announced the submission of a Petition for Review on Certiorari with a request for a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction before the Supreme Court, in line with the Court of Appeals' decision in the Writ of Kalikasan case filed against Golden Rice, also known as Malusog Rice.
The Philippine Court of Appeals released a decision in August 2024 ordering PhilRice to stop the commercial propagation activities of Malusog Rice. PhilRice asked the Supreme Court in their petition for the reversal of the CA rulings and recall of the Writ of Kalikasan.
Golden Rice was subjected to rigorous safety assessments and received regulatory approvals from Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Health Canada, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI). The Philippines became the first country to allow the planting of Golden Rice after DA-BPI granted the crop's cultivation approval in 2021.
