NZ Approves GM Maize Import

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) has approved for import and sale a specific variety of genetically modified (GM) high lysine corn. The corn is used as animal feed but has been assessed should it get into the human supply chain. While the product can be imported and sold in New Zealand, such products must follow GM labeling requirements.

NZFSA Director Carole Inkster said the assessment process which included two rounds of public consultation enabled the authority to to decide that the corn is as safe as the conventional variety.
