Legislation for India's Public-Funded Research in Biotech

January 11, 2008

India's Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has submitted a draft bill `Public funded R&D (protection, utilization and regulation of intellectual property) Bill 2007' to the Cabinet for approval. The legislation seeks to promote, protect and optimize the potential of public funded research and development in biotechnology and life sciences by regulating intellectual property rights.

DBT has been investing significantly to biotechnology research and development so the bill will refine and further develop the outcomes of these researches by finding direct applications. In addition, it will encourage  collaborations between government and non-government organizations and catalyze commercialization of intellectual property generated out of public-funded R&D projects.

Large amounts of funds have already been invested in biotechnology R&D so the new bill will seek to refine and further develop the outcomes of these researches by finding direct applications.
