India to Invest Big in Science Education and R&D

January 11, 2008

India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced an unprecedented funding for science education and research in the country for the next five years. The government is planning to fund 30 new Central Universities, five new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, and eight new Indian Institutes of Technology among others. Included also are plans to open thousands of new vocational and polytechnic schools and skill development centers. Science innovation scholarships will also be given to students; with 10,000 scholarships of 100,000 rupees per year for those enrolling in science degree courses. The schemes, announced by Singh while opening the 95th Indian Science Congress, are intended to replenish the government agencies’ shrinking pool of science personnel. Funding the schemes has required a fivefold increase in the education budget for 2007–2012.
