Brazil and Congo Collaborate to Boost Agriculture

December 21, 2007

Congo and Brazil signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further the scientific cooperation between the countries. The MoU was signed in Brasilia by Congo’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Jeanne Dambedzet and Silvio Crestana, president of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). Under the MoU, Congo and Brazil will implement a series of programs to improve the agriculture, livestock and forestry systems in both countries.

Dambedzet said that Congo has much to learn from Brazil, especially in sugar cane production. Both countries are also facing the same challenges in agroforestry conservation. The Congo basin forest is the second largest tropical forest after the Amazon. Under the agreement, Brazil will train technicians and researchers from the Congo. The country is also expected to help Congo in the construction of an agricultural research facility. EMBRAPA established its first African branch in Accra, Ghana last year.
