Ugandan Scientists Help Tanzania Legislators with Biotech Concerns

The progress of biotech research in Uganda has led scientists and legislators from other African countries to advance theirs. For instance, institutes under Uganda's National Research Organization (NARO) are currently conducting research using biotechnology on crops prioritized by the Ministry of Agriculture.

This has attracted a delegation from Tanzania, led by Binilith Mahenga, minister of environment, to visit Uganda and learn more about their experiences in biotech research. The Tanzanian legislators and scientists visited the confined field trials of biotech crops in Namulonge and Kawanda. They were impressed with the ongoing projects and promised to sensitize fellow legislators to amend laws blocking the scientists from conducting confined field trials.
