Regulation of GMOs in India

February 5, 2014

The Plant Biotechnology Journal publishes a research paper examining the science of regulation of GM crops in India. The research draws a corollary on science, regulation and policy environment that resulted in a phenomenal success of green revolution in India with that of the 21st century gene revolution technologies. The paper thoroughly looks into the process of regulatory approvals of GM crops such as Bt cotton and Bt brinjal in India and identifies key regulatory constraints in the current biosafety regulatory framework that need to be rectified for the Indian regulatory system to function in a cost-effective and time-bound manner. The review paper offers legislative corrections and suggests measures either to re-establish the functioning of the current regulatory system or implement a new regulatory framework that can provide smallholder farmers access to genetically enhanced crops.
