Pakistan Formulates Biotech Policy Plan
February 5, 2014 |
Pakistan Minister for National Food Security and Research, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, announced that the national biotech policy is currently being formulated, along with other guidelines and regulatory measures to enhance agricultural productivity and protection. He mentioned this during his speech in a workshop on biotechnology and biosafety.
Bosan stressed that the use of agricultural biotechnology has the potential to enhance Pakistan's food production by at least six percent. Thus, he encouraged upgrading and improving capacity of national biotech research institutes. He called for the development of second generation biotech crops with improved resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses so the country could catch up with other country that are adopting biotech crops.
