Philippine Department of Education Recognizes Key Role of Biotech in National Development

The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) highlighted the value of biotechnology in addressing agricultural and environmental challenges in the country during the opening ceremony of the 9th National Biotechnology Week (NBW) on November 25, 2013 at Universidad De Manila, Manila City. In her message, DepEd Undersecretary for Programs and Projects Dr. Dina Ocampo said that biotechnology, when applied responsibly, can address many challenges brought about by climate change such as food security, quality health care, and clean environment. She also cited the application of biotech in forensic analysis and restoration of balance in the soil and ecology. Dr. Ocampo also said that "education plays a key role in opening the minds of the youth on the importance of biotechnology to agricultural development."
DepEd is the chair agency of this year's NBW which was held on November 25-29. The week-long celebration will showcase local biotech researches and products and promote awareness on the benefits and potentials of the technology among stakeholders. The NBW will involve a week-long exhibit of government and non-government agencies and research institutions such as the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Agriculture, and University of the Philippines Los Banos-National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH). Also included in the lineup of activities are a farmers forum and study visit, the Jose G. Burgos, Jr. Awards for Biotech Journalism, and a film showing on biotechnology.
