Bt Corn Field Visit in Beijing
September 18, 2013 |
A Bt Corn Field Experience Activity initiated by Agrogene, an agri-biotech public education website under the Platform of Science Communication for Agricultural Biotechnology (PSCAB) was held at the Corn Test Base of China Agricultural University (CAU) in Haidian, Beijing on September 7, 2013.
Ten scientists including Academician Dai Jingrui from CAU and Prof. Da Fanghuang from Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), a dozen journalists, and 30 volunteers and net friends attended the activity. Bt-799 Insect Resistant Corn is now in production test phase. Dr. Lai Jinsheng from CAU, developer of Bt-799, led the field visit and gave a briefing. Participants picked and tasted the corn produce.
Popular writer Dr. Fang Zhouzi said, "The safety of Bt corn has been confirmed internationally by many years' adoption. But in China, there is no GM corn commercialization. The benefit of GM corn should be made known to a bigger populace. The field activity especially the eating part is not a safety test but a valuable public education strategy."
