October 17, 2012 |
During the inauguration of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute's (BARI) external research review, Parliamentary Commiittee on Agriculture Affairs Chairman Shawkat Momen Shajahan expressed his continuous support to modern technology including biotech to combat environmental problems such as submergence, salinity, and drought. Research towards the development of new crop varieties including rice with high yield and can tolerate these problems are commendable and are highly appreciated by the people of Bangladesh.
Similarly, special guest Abdul Mannan, MP expressed his appreciation in expediting the development of varieties suitable for drought and flood prone areas through biotechnology. These varieties will be able to withstand stress conditions and at the same time produce food to feed the people in affected areas. The annual review workshop was chaired by Dr. Md, Rafiqul Islam, director general of BARI, who promised to strengthen capacities to breed new varieties and develop technologies adapted to farmers in stress conditions. The meeting was well attended by around 500 agricultural scientists.
