Analysis of Open Source Agbiotech in Developing Countries

September 5, 2012

Agricultural biotechnology is one of the promising tools that could help achieve sustainable agriculture, especially in the developing countries. However, privatization and increased intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection have caused the difficulty for those in developing countries to gain access to modern biotechnology research tools to improve agricultural productivity.

Ademola Adenle of the United Nations University and colleagues reviewed the existing open source literature on biotechnology in developing countries and analyzed the effect of IPRs on agricultural biotechnology. They used standard qualitative research methodology and analysis of specific case studies and initiative to come up with an innovative Open Source Biotechnology Framework (OSBF) which can be used to address the challenges in IPRs.
