Philippines: Ready to Export Corn

September 5, 2012

With the increasing production of corn in the Philippines, it is now ready to export corn to drought stricken areas that lack corn supply such as the United States. According to Edilberto de Luna, director of the Philippines' National Corn Program, the country has the capacity to export as much as 100 tons at any given time. He also said that members of the interagency committee are now reviewing the appeal of the Philippine Maize Federation, Inc. (PhilMaize) to export corn. The committee will decide on the volume of maize that the country could export.

It is projected that the Philippine corn production would increase to 7.82 million metric tons this year, and 8.45 million metric tons next year. "By next year, we are projecting a surplus of 149,000 metric tons of corn," De Luna revealed.
