New Alliance for Food Security to Accelerate Agricultural Development in Africa

September 5, 2012

The New Alliance for Food Security to Accelerate Agricultural Development in Africa was launched in Accra, Ghana, on August 29. Initiated by the G-8 nations, African countries and the private sector, the Alliance aims to lift 50 million people out of poverty in the next 10 years.

Nii Amansa Namoale, Ghana's Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture who launched the project, said that the initiative is designed to accelerate the programs started by many African countries to urgently address the twin problems of food security and nutrition. He added that food security and nutrition involve many factors and that international assistance alone could not fulfill the objectives which are more pressing now that Africa's role is expanding in global economy.
