Nanotechnologies for the Poor

July 15, 2011

Nanotechnology involves manipulating matter at the atomic, molecular and supramolecular levels. Potential applications in agricultural, food, and water safety could have significant impacts on rural populations in developing countries. However, there are challenges to be faced by this technology says Guillaume Gruère  and colleagues of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

These obstacles will occur from investment in research and development (R&D) to adoption and use. Issues include intellectual property rights (IPR), the management of safety and environmental risks in the presence of wide uncertainties, and possible market displacement effects induced by these technologies, among other concerns.
