China Opts for International Cooperation on Biotechnology

July 15, 2011

The biotechnology industry in China is "poised for a leap and greater international cooperation that will facilitate this leap forward," says Li Zhe and Guo Lifeng of the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development. In an article Development of biotechnology in China: Key policies and priorities  published in the Asian Biotechnology and Development Review , they noted that more public research and development funds have been alloted to biotechnology, and more efforts are focused on the transfer and commercialization of its products.

The authors opined that lack of experience in the commercialization of products is a constraint. To learn from the international community, China has adopted measures to expand the scope for science and technology cooperation. Programs are being institutionalized to encourage joint international laboratories and or research and development centers.
