German Chancellor Visits BecA

German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) laboratories at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi on July 12, 2011. Apollinaire Djikeng, BecA's technology manager, updated Merkel of BecA's efforts to strengthen biosciences capacity in the region through training of African agricultural scientists. The center also generates productive collaborations between scientists in Africa and experts in other parts of the world including Germany.

Merkel was also briefed on ongoing research that included an effort to improve the resistance of sweet potato to the sweet potato weevil, an important food crop pest.
