Fighting the Emergence of Banana Diseases in the Caribbean

March 25, 2011

Banana and plantain, the staple in the Caribbean countries are in the verge of being wiped out with the new disease called black Sigatoka or black leaf streak. The disease is controlled by regular, frequent and costly aerial fungicide treatments. In addition, hybrids which were developed to resist the disease are already requiring additional help from fungicide treatments.

The CabarĂ© project was then conceived by leading institutions in the Caribbean to propose and promote new banana cropping systems using hybrid varieties resistant to the disease. The project was recently launched in the Dominican Republic with experts from the French Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD) that will  provide the technical assistance.
