Boosting Rice and Maize Production in Bangladesh

May 28, 2010

Farmers in Bangladesh are recipients of new farming technologies developed by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and the International Rice Research Institute as part of an ACIAR-funded research to help boost rice and maize production. Several field days were conducted in March to April showcasing a range of moisture-tolerant maize varieties and more sustainable rice-maize growing systems.

The country's demand for maize for food and feed has been increasing and these technologies will lead the crop production trend from the traditional rice-rice and rice-wheat cropping systems and towards rice-maize systems. In addition, improved technological package being introduced and promoted include maize planting in several tillage systems (strip, minimum and zero), fresh beds and permanent beds.

"These field days provide ample opportunities for farmers, stakeholders, and researchers to share their experiences with each other on these new technologies," said Jagadish Timsina, senior cropping system agronomist and project leader.
