May 28, 2010

The contribution rate of science and technology, especially modern biotechnology, for China's agricultural growth has increased from 27% to 51% during the last 30 years. Dr. Xia Jingyuan, director of the National Agri-Technology Extension and Service Center, Ministry of Science and Technology of People's Republic of China made these remarks during The 3rd International Biotechnology and Agriculture Summit hosted by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission in Beijing, China on May 19-20, 2010.

Yang Weiguang, vice director of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, also recognized biotechnology by saying that "we must depend on biotechnology to promote the seed industry which is the core of agricultural science and technology development." More than 300 policy makers, scientists, entrepreneurs and representatives from government, public/private sector, and media attended the summit to discuss issues such as matching agricultural S&T achievement and industrial demand, and financing of agri-biotechnology enterprises under government guidance.
