Bangladesh-India Scientists Meet on Bt Brinjal Progress

September 25, 2009

Bengali and Indian scientists involved in the development of Bt brinjal met recently in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in India to discuss recent updates on the project and to assess commercialization possibilities. The Bengali group was led by Dr. Shudhakarthe, head of the Biotechnology Department and Director of the Biological Science Institute in Bangladesh.

The scientists agreed that Bt brinjal should be commercialized in both countries upon the satisfactory conduct of the multi-location trial this year in Bangladesh using the BC3F3 materials. Simultaneously, the BC4 materials will be produced in India to ensure the genetic stability of the materials. Bt brinjal is planned to be commercialized in India and Bangladesh in two to three years time.
