Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru Discuss Biosafety of GMOs

September 25, 2009

Scientists from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru will be meeting in Embrapa, Brazil on September 28, 2010 to standardize procedures of biosafety for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their respective countries. The presentations will be in conjuction with the project on "Latin America: the construction of multi-second capacity of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety" which was developed jointly between representatives of these countries and approved by the Global Environment Facility of the World Bank.

Country representatives are expected to present in detail the technical and scientific components of the project. The development of the Biosafety LAC is also a response to a need to strengthen capacity in each participating country in relation to the environmental safety of GMOs, in evaluating socioeconomic impact, and the development of communication formats complementary to the skills of scientists from countries working in the area of biosafety.
