KARI to Release Weed-Resistant Sorghum in December

September 30, 2011

Kenyan farmers will soon plant the new striga-resistant variety of sorghum, according to Ephrain Mukisira, director of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). Striga, also known as the witch weed, attacks sorghum by growing into the roots where it sucks out water and nutrients. Striga could cause up to 100 percent damage, which is very discouraging for farmers.

Dr. Mukisira also said that they are testing the varieties in the field before releasing the seeds to farmers. He mentioned about the new variety during the meeting in Nairobi organized by the Africa Biodiversity Conservation and Innovations Centre and the Association for Strengthening Agriculture Research in Eastern and Central Africa. The meeting was also attended by scientists from Sudan and Eritrea where more than 50 weed-resistant varieties have also been tested.
