Accelerating the Development of Strategic Industries in China
June 24, 2011 |
The 5th China Bioindustry Convention (BioChina 2011) with the theme "Developing a Green Economy by Cultivating Bio-industry" spearheaded by the China State Development and Reform Commission, and supported by the People's Government of Shenzhen and Chinese Society of Biotechnology (CSBT), was held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, from June 17-19, 2011. Around 300 public and private institutions participated in 14 forums and a bio-industry exhibition. More than 2,000 participants joined the discussions on state policies, new technologies, and bio-industrial services.
Mr. Xiaoqiang Zhang, Vice Director of China State Development and Reform Commission, said that under the circumstances of climate changes and energy/food security challenges all over the world, China needs to accelerate the development of strategic industries such as bio-industry. Dr. Randy Hautea, Global Coordinator of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) gave a presentation on "Increasing Global Adoption of Biotech Crops: Contribution to Food Security". He shared global biotech crops industrialization experience from 1996-2010, and pointed out that although biotechnology is not the only way to solve food security issues, it is an effective way.
