IRRI 50th Year Celebration in Bangladesh Focused on Stress Tolerance in Rice

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Inaugurated the 50 Years of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Celebration Workshop and 2 day Seed Fair in Bangabandhu International Convention Centre, Dhaka on 14 July 2010. The premier appreciated agriculturists for developing salinity, drought and submergence tolerant rice to combat the natural calamities and changed climate and sustain food security in the country and in the world. The IRRI Director General Dr. Robert S Zeigler highlighted the importance of breeding new varieties with appropriate new traits to feed the increasing population of Bangladesh. He mentioned that Bangladeshi scientists developed few stress tolerant hybrids and varieties BR-40, 41, 47, 51 & 52; BINA-8 & 9 using genes shared by IRRI. He assured that IRRI will continue to strengthen the cooperation with BRRI for developing appropriate varieties the country will need.

IRRI Bangladesh Representative Dr. M. Zainul Abedin highlighted the current rice researches on submergence, drought, salinity, cold injury and nutrition related traits in Bangladesh. BRAC Executive Chairman Dr. Mahbub Hossain presented the ongoing research on stress tolerance and the ongoing collaboration with Vietnam and Africa.

The event was attended by around 500 scientists, policy makers and government personalities, and organized by Ministry of Agriculture and IRRI.
