Croatia Conducts TAIEX Workshop on GMO Monitoring

Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) conducted a workshop entitled "Post-release and Post-Market Monitoring of GMOs" in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Nature Protection Directorate. The workshop attended by 66 participants from the said ministry was held on June 15, 2010 in Zagred, Croatia.
Some of the topics presented in the one-day workshop were as follows:
- Introduction to the "Ecological monitoring of GMOs"
- A conceptual framework for the design of post-market environmental monitoring of GM plants, and case study examples on butterflies
- Farm questionnaires as tool for post-market environmental monitoring of GM crops
- Case study: EU member state experience on post-release monitoring: Monitoring for Resistance in Target Pests: Bt Corn (MON810)
The topics were presented by five professors and scientists namely Prof. Dr. Detlef Bartsch (Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, Germany); Dr. Gema P. Farinos (Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas, Spain); Dr. Andreas Haissenberger (Federal Agency for Environment, Austria); Dr. Olivier Sanvido (Agroscope Reckenholz Tänikon Research Station ART Biosafety, Switzerland); Dr. Ralf Wilhelm (Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, Institute for Biosafety of Genetically Modified Plants, Germany).
