Grassroot Leaders Awarded 2010 World Food Prize
June 18, 2010 |
David Beckmann and Jo Luck shared the 2010 World Food Prize in ceremonies held at the U.S. State Department on June 16, 2010. This was announced by Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation. The formal presentation of the award will be done during the Laureate Award Ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol on October 14 as part of the World Food Prize 2010 Borlaug Dialogue.
"David Beckmann and Jo Luck are receiving the World Food Prize for their landmark achievements in building Bread for the World and Heifer International into two of the world's foremost grassroots organizations leading the charge to end hunger and poverty for millions of people around the globe," Quinn said.
A press release from the World Food Prize says that Bread of the World is a "collective Christian voice" where a "quarter of a million constituents contact their elected officials to urge support for legislation to change the policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger to persist." Heilfer International creates innovative public education initiatives by educating the world's resource-poor and hungry to become self-sustaining.
