Japan and China Sign Food Safety Pact

June 11, 2010

Officials from Japan and China recently arrived at a bilateral agreement to develop food safety standards and to bring back the confidence of consumers on imported food. Through this agreement, both states are allowed to examine each others food processing facilities especially when safety problems on imported food arise.

This pact was stimulated by the 2007 food poisoning incident wherein 11 Japanese got sick after eating pesticide-tainted gyoza dumplings imported from China. The pact also includes carrying out of yearly meetings and formulation strategies to effectively and promptly resolve food safety issues.
