Inhibition of Golgi Function Causes Starch Accumulation in the Plastids

June 11, 2010

Golgi apparatus is an organelle found in the cellular endomembrane system, functioning for the processing and packaging of macromolecules after their synthesis. Recent studies have shown that there is a direct transport of proteins from Golgi apparatus to the photosynthetic organelle chloroplast, targeting proteins to their destinations within the membranes and stroma of plastids. Thus, Eric Hummel of Oxford Brookes University, together with other scientists, investigated further the relationship of these two important organelles in plants.

The researchers conducted starch assay of various plant samples and discovered that when the secretion of proteins is blocked, starch accumulate within the plastids. This is caused by Golgi disassembly, promoted by either the secretory inhibitor brefeldin A or through an inducible Sar1-GTP system, hence proving the relationship of the two organelles.
